Carlos Barrios was born into a Spanish family on El Altiplano, Guatemala. He is an anthropologist, author of the book called in Spanish "Kam Wuj: El Libro Del Destino", which is very successful and is being translated and published in English. Barrios lives in Huehuetenango, also home of the Maya, in the Mam tribe. Together with other Maya and other keeper of tradition, the Mam transfer part of the Mayan traditions, are considered guardians of the time, and authorities on remarkable, ancient, elegant and relevant calendars.

Barrios is a historian, an anthropologist and an investigator. After studying for 25 years with the "elder of tradition" from the age of 19 years, he has also become an Ajq'ij of Mayan tradition:  a priest of ceremonies and spiritual guide, belonging to the Eagle Clan. Years ago with his brother Gerardo, Carlos initiated a research in the various Mayan calendars. He studied with many teachers. He says his brother Gerardo interviewed nearly 600 "elders" of the Mayan tradition, so that they could expand their knowledge of space.

"Anthropologists visit the temple sites", says Mr. Barrios, "and read the inscriptions and make up stories about the Maya, but do not read the signs correctly. It's just their imagination. Others write a prophecy in the name of the Maya. They say the world will end in December 2012. This is why the "elders" Mayans are angry . The world will not end, but will be transformed." The indigenous have the calendars and they know how to interpret them accurately, not the others. The understanding of the time of the Mayan calendars, the understanding of the seasons and cycles has proven itself to be vast and sophisticated. The Maya include 17 different calendars, some of them representing the time accurately for a period of time spanning more than 10 million years. The calendar in 1987 is attracting attention globally and consistently, is called Tzolk'in or Cholq'ij. Designed ages ago and based on the cycles of the Pleiades is still considered sacred.

With the indigenous calendars, native people have kept track of important turning points in history. For example, the "keepers of the day", who study the calendars, identified an important day in the year One Reed (A Rush), Ce Acatal, as it was called by the Mexicans. That was the day it prophesied, that an important ancestor would return as a "butterfly". In the Western calendar the date is the Sunday of Easter April 21, 1519, the day that Hernando Cortez and his fleet of 11 Spanish galleons arrived from the east to the place we now call Vera Cruz, Mexico.

When the Spanish ships came ashore, the natives were waiting and watching to see how it would go. The billowing sails of the ships actually remember the stirring of butterflies on the water. Thus began a new era, an era that had anticipated their calendars with the Maya was named the new Bolomtikus the 9, or 9 Hells of 52 years each. While the new cycle is opened, the natives were deprived of freedom and territories. Disease and disrespect dominated. What began with the arrival of Cortez, lasted until August 16, 1987 - a date that many remember as the "Harmonic Convergence".

Millions of people took advantage of that date to make ceremony in sacred sites, praying for a smooth transition to a new era, the World of the Fifth Sun. From 1987 to now, Mr. Barrios says, we are in a time where the right arm of the materialistic world is disappearing, slowly but surely. We are on the cusp of the era where peace begins, and people live in harmony with Mother Earth.

We are no longer in the world of the fourth Sun, but even in that one of the fifth Sun. This is the time in between, the time of transition, and while we cross it, there is a colossal and global convergence of environmental destruction, social chaos, war and constant changes of the Earth.

All this, says Mr. Barrios, was foreseen through the simple spiral mathematics of the Mayan calendars. "It will change," observes Mr. Barrios. "Everything will change."

He says that the Maya Keepers of Time see December 21, 2012 as a rebirth, the beginning of of the world of the 5th Sun. It will be the beginning of a new era, that will result from the fact, that the meridian of the sun will cross the galactic equator, and the Earth will align with the center of the galaxy. At dawn on December 21, 2012, for the first time in 26,000 years, the Sun will rise to join at the intersection with the Milky Way and the plane of the ecliptic. This cosmic cross is considered the personification of the sacred tree, the Tree of Life: a tree remembered in all the world's spiritual traditions. Some observers say, that this alignment with the heart of the galaxy, in 2012, will open a channel for cosmic energy, so it can flow to earth, by cleaning and purifying all who dwell on, and raising all to a higher level of vibration. This process has already begun, says Mr. Barrios. "The change is accelerating and will continue to do so. If the people of Earth will be able to get this 2012 in good shape, without having destroyed too much of the Earth - says Mr.Barrios  - we will rise to a new level. But to get there, we need to transform large and powerful forces that seek to block the road."
